The sixth season of the signature seminar series the Sizzling Summer Science Spotlight (S4) webinar, hosted by the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, featured a colorful array of presenters July 15-August 12, 2021. 

VBS Assistant Professors Peter Larsen and Roxanne Larsen, along with members of the Minnesota Center for Prion Research and Outreach (MNPRO) team at the College of Veterinary Medicine are the first team to use a forensics research approach to identify Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) within deer carcass remains.

VBS Researchers Elizabeth Miller, Irene Bueno Padilla, along with VPM Professor Julie Ponder were awarded grant from the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources to research microbiome in raptors.

VBS Assistant Professor Peter Larsen hopes to reduce the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer by producing faster testing that can be conducted in the field as well as test meat processing equipment to avoid potential risks for consumers.

VBS Teaching faculty Drs. Erin Burton, Roxanne Larsen, and Mark Rutherford received UMN Center for Educational Innovation 'Thank a Teacher' awards.

New courses will be offered for individuals seeking training that will profide training for early- to mid-career professionals interested in advanced understanding of poultry health and disease.

Eight VBS graduate students were awarded fellowships and/or grants in the following categories: 2021-2022 MnDRIVE Global Food Venture Fellowship; 2021-2022 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship; Comparative Pathology/Medicine T32 Training grant; and American CARES Act Degree Completion grants.

Up until now, there has never been a formal poultry training program in the state of Minnesota.
