Biography
Summary
Dr. Trevor R. Ames is currently the Associate Vice President of Academic Health Sciences in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. In his current position, he provides leadership that positions the University’s academic health sciences as a nationally recognized innovative interprofessional hub for education, research and practice. For 12 years prior to his current position, he served as Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Prior to his term as Dean he also served as Chair of the Veterinary Population Medicine Department, acting chair of the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department, Chair of the Veterinary Medical Center Leadership Team and Interim Dean of the College.
Dr. Ames joined the College of Veterinary Medicine faculty in 1981 after completing an internship and residency at the University of Minnesota. He received his D.V.M. in 1978 from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and his Master of Science degree in 1981 from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Ames is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and he has spent his career teaching internal medicine to veterinary students, interns and residents. His research career focused on understanding infectious diseases of animals and training graduate students in this area.
Dr. Ames is active in organized veterinary medicine having been a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine for over 30 years. He participated on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association and the Minnesota Board of Animal Health and served as a board member of the Animal Humane Society, American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic. Dr. Ames also served on the board of Directors for the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges for 6 years including a term as President. In 2020, Dr. Ames was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association.
