Application Checklist

Items due to Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) by the September 16, 2024, 11:59 PM, Eastern Time, application deadline:

  • Electronic VMCAS application (2025 VMCAS Applicant guide)
  • Official copies of all college transcripts, including coursework taken abroad. Foreign transcripts will need to be evaluated by a transcript evaluation service. 
    • University of Minnesota students must submit their UMN transcripts to VMCAS as well. We are not able to access UMN transcripts internally.
  • Three electronic Letters of Reference (eLOR) submitted by a minimum of three individuals identified on the VMCAS application.
  • VMCAS application fees based on the number of veterinary colleges applied to.

Items due to University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine by the September 16, 2024, application deadline

  • Application processing fee paid online with a credit or debit card.
    • $85 if applying to the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine
    • $85 if applying to SDSU – UMN (Rural Veterinarian Practitioners Program)
    • $135 if applying to both UMN and combined SDSU – UMN (Rural Veterinarian Practitioners Program)

 

UMN CVM Application Fee Waiver Program

  • Refund UMN CVM $85 application fee for economically disadvantaged students
  • To qualify, applicants must first receive waiver from VMCAS using their evaluation criteria: VMCAS Fee Assistance Program
  • Applicants request refund by completing a short survey after their application has been officially verified by VMCAS
  • Candidates may apply once they have successfully submitted their VMCAS application and paid the UMN CVM $85 application processing fee (both due by the September 16, 2024, deadline).
  • Applications to this program will be available to complete online starting in May 2024, and accepted by October 1, 2024.
  • A copy of the letter/email confirming the candidate’s participation in the VMCAS Fee Refund Program will be required as part of the application materials.
  • The UMN CVM will review and select a limited number of applicants to receive an $85 refund shortly after the October 1, 2024 deadline. All participants will be notified of their refund status shortly after the October 1, 2024 deadline.

 

 

 

Answers to frequently asked questions

 

  • Transcripts need to be official and should be received by VMCAS in their original sealed envelopes by the September 16, 2024, deadline. The U of M is unable to process transcripts sent directly to us, or to forward transcripts to VMCAS.

 

  • Applications will be verified by VMCAS throughout the fall semester. The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine will check in with select applicants who are not verified by early November for an update.

 

  • GRE scores are not required any longer starting with the 2021-22 application cycle.

 

  • Mail all transcripts to: VMCAS – Transcripts, P.O. Box 9126, Watertown, MA 02471.

 

  • The University of Minnesota does not have a supplemental application.

 

  • Applicants will receive an email confirmation shortly after the application deadline and a status update by early January 2024. Check in with us at [email protected] if you don’t get an initial application confirmation email by the end of September, or if you don’t get an application status update by early January.

 

  • Applicants who are missing application materials will be notified in September and given a short window of time to submit any missing items.

 

Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine with South Dakota State University

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN CVM) and South Dakota State University (SDSU) have partnered together to create a 2+2 rural veterinary practitioner program. SDSU admits a class of up to 20 students to complete their first two years of veterinary school at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. The cohort completes their last two years at the UMN CVM, and graduates with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, issued by the University of Minnesota.

Prospective students may apply to SDSU, UMN CVM, or both programs, through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). The UMN CVM and SDSU will conduct separate and independent admissions processes, using similar admissions acceptance criteria. More details on SDSU’s admissions criteria can be found here.

SDSU is a public research university located in Brookings, SD, with a student enrollment of about 12,000. Founded in 1881 as a land-grant university, SDSU is the state's largest and most comprehensive university focused on academic programs in agriculture, engineering, nursing, and pharmacy, as well as liberal arts. Brookings is the fourth largest city in South Dakota, with a population of approximately 24,000.
