Dr. Scott Madill retires, upcoming changes to the VMC Large Animal Theriogenology Service
July 28, 2025
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to share that Dr. Scott Madill retired from the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) on July 18, 2025.
Dr. Madill joined the college in 1995 as an equine theriogenologist and has served in many important roles, including Associate Professor in Theriogenology and Interim Co-Medical Director of the VMC. His clinical expertise, dedication to teaching, and steady leadership have left a lasting mark on our college and the veterinary profession. He is also fondly remembered for his sharp wit and good humor. Please join us in thanking Dr. Madill for his many contributions and wishing him well in retirement.
We are also pleased to welcome Dr. Michelle Kutzler, a board-certified theriogenologist, in a primarily teaching role. While her clinical involvement will be limited, she will provide support in select clinical areas and contribute to training the next generation of veterinarians.
As we move forward, there will be some adjustments to the Large Animal Theriogenology Service:
- Beginning this fall, routine theriogenology cases (e.g., breeding soundness evaluations, fertility workups, stallion collection, reproductive management) and consults will no longer be offered.
- Equine clients referred for dystocia should be prepared for a cesarean section, as assisted vaginal deliveries and other fetal manipulation will not be available.
- For non-equine large animal species, reproductive emergencies, including dystocia, will still be accepted, with cesarean section as the primary option.
We recognize these changes may affect referral options and want to assure you of our ongoing commitment to supporting you and your clients. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Thank you for your continued partnership.
Warm regards,
VMC Large Animal and Equine Team
