Summary

Dr. Costa’s research focuses broadly on investigating pathogen virulence mechanisms in order to develop approaches to mitigate disease and reduce antimicrobial usage. He is interested in the issues associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across the animal-human interface, and how they pose challenges for sustainable food production, animal welfare, and public health. More recently, his research has focused on infectious diseases to which antibiotic treatment is the producer’s only option (e.g. swine dysentery and streptococcal meningitis).
