Microbiology and swine microbiome analysis

Research Summary/Interests

My laboratory, which was the inventor of the first federally licensed vaccine in the US produced using recombinant DNA technology, is studying the molecular basis of pathogenesis of two pathogens: Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. We focus on microbial populations (the microbiome) in the intestines of pigs in response to treatment with an antimicrobial growth promoter. A major conclusion from this work is that tylosin may accelerate the maturation of the adult gut microbiome and this facilitates growth promotion. We also are examining the interaction of two pathogens, Salmonella enterica and Lawsonia intracellularis with the pig gut microbiome that leads to increased shedding of S. enterica.
