Pharmacology; Smooth muscle function; Calcium signaling in excitable cells; animal models of allergic airway disease

Research Summary/Interests

My laboratory is investigating the contribution of the cell-surface protein CD38 to allergic airway disease characterized by airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. We focus on transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms of regulation of expression of CD38 in airway smooth muscle. We investigate the contribution of CD38-derived and cyclic ADP-ribose-mediated intracellular calcium regulation to airway smooth muscle cell responses to spasmogens using pharmacological and genetic approaches. Our current interests are in defining the role of adenosine that is generated through the enzymatic activity of CD38 in lung inflammation, hyperresponsiveness, and airway remodeling in allergic airway disease.

Academic Interests and Focus
